Hank Mobley - No Room for Squares (UHQ-CD)

In addition to boasting one of Reid Miles’ greatest album cover designs,Ā Hank Mobley’s 1963 albumĀ No Room for SquaresĀ is also a marvel for the music alone. The tenor saxophonist had already notched several hard bop masterpieces in his Blue Note belt includingĀ Soul StationĀ andĀ Workout, butĀ No Room for SquaresĀ was an even more ambitious effort that found Mobley elevating his game as a bandleader, improviser, and a composer. The album was drawn from two different sessions each featuring a different quintet line-up. A March 7 date found Mobley with trumpeterĀ Donald Byrd, pianistĀ Herbie Hancock, bassistĀ Butch Warren, and drummerĀ Philly Joe JonesĀ who deliver thrilling performances of the Mobley originals ā€œUp a Stepā€ and ā€œOld World, New Imports.ā€ Mobley returned to Van Gelder Studio on October 2 with Jones once again on drums plus trumpeterĀ Lee Morgan, pianistĀ Andrew Hill, and bassistĀ John OreĀ to lay down takes of Mobley’s skittering tunes ā€œThree Way Splitā€ and ā€œNo Room for Squaresā€ in addition to two remarkable Morgan tunes: the gorgeous ballad ā€œCarolynā€ and the grooving ā€œMe ā€˜N You.ā€

UHQ-CD’s reproduce the sound of original master tapes as faithfully as possible by utilizing new transfer technologies and improved materials to produce high-quality sound with a better representation of the whole stage.
