Jackie McLean - Jacknife LP (Tone Poet Vinyl Series)
Jackie McLeanās evocative 1965 albumĀ JacknifeĀ captured the alto saxophonist in an envelope-pushing post-bop mode. The session featured two trumpetersāLee MorganĀ andĀ Charles Tolliverāwho are heard together to great effect on Morganās groovy āSoft Blue,ā but otherwise take turns in the spotlight. McLean also assembled a deeply engaged rhythm section for the date featuring pianistĀ Larry Willis, bassistĀ Larry Ridley, and drummerĀ Jack DeJohnette. McLeanās fiery sound ignites a wide range of material from the expansive modal explorations of Tolliverās āOn The Nileā to the churning rhythms of DeJohnetteās āClimaxā to McLeanās own āBlue Fable,ā which delivers a loping melody over shifting feels before settling into a deep pocketed swing for emphatic solos by McLean and Morgan.
