Jimmy Smith - Back At The Chicken Shack (UHQ CD)

Jimmy SmithĀ was a self-taught pianist who abandoned the instrument in 1954 in favour of the Hammond B3 organ, renting a Philadelphia warehouse and woodshedding for a year until he emerged with a revolutionary style that immediately caught the ear of Alfred Lion. The Blue Note boss dubbed himĀ The Incredible Jimmy SmithĀ and recorded the B3 innovator as frequently as he could between 1956 and 1963.Ā It’s a testament to Smith’s volcanic creativity that he recorded not one but two soul jazz classics — Midnight SpecialĀ andĀ Back at the Chicken Shack — when he entered Rudy Van Gelder’s studio on April 25, 1960 withĀ Stanley TurrentineĀ on tenor saxophone,Ā Kenny BurrellĀ on guitar, andĀ Donald BaileyĀ on drums.

UHQ-CD’s reproduce the sound of original master tapes as faithfully as possible by utilizing new transfer technologies and improved materials to produce high-quality sound with a better representation of the whole stage. UHQ-CDs comply with CD standards and can be played on existing players. Each title is presented in a UHQ-CD jewel case with an obi-strip and the original sleeve notes reproduced on the back inlay.

1. Back At The Chicken Shack
2. When I Grow Too Old To Dream
