Lee Morgan - Infinity (UHQ CD)
Just two months after recording his exceptional sextet date Cornbread, the prolific trumpeter Lee Morgan was back in Van Gelder Studio in November 1965 with a slightly slimmed downâbut no less robustâquintet line-up to record his next session Infinity, which wouldnât be first released until 1981. Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean and drummer Billy Higginsâboth of whom were featured on Cornbreadâwere at Morganâs side once again along with pianist Larry Willis and bassist Reggie Workman for a five-song set that ventured to the far reaches of the hard bop tradition and beyond. Four compelling Morgan originals and McLeanâs engaging ballad âPortrait of Dollâ cover a wide expanse of musical terrain including the probing title track, the laid-back 6/8 groove of âMiss Nettie B,â the intricate interlaced lines of âGrowing Pains,â and the hard-charging closer âZip Code.â
UHQ-CDâs reproduce the sound of original master tapes as faithfully as possible by utilizing new transfer technologies and improved materials to produce high-quality sound with a better representation of the whole stage. UHQ-CDs comply with CD standards and can be played on existing players. Each title is presented in a UHQ-CD jewel case with an obi-strip and the original sleeve notes reproduced on the back inlay.
