Lou Donaldson - Blues Walk (UHQ-CD)

Lou DonaldsonĀ had already been at the helm of seven Blue Note sessions by the time he made his undisputed masterpieceĀ Blues WalkĀ in 1958. The alto saxophonist quickly became a fixture on the Blue Note scene after he first played on a Milt Jackson date in 1952 with sideman appearance on sessions led by Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, and Jimmy Smith, as well as a co-led date with Clifford Brown. OnĀ Blues Walk, Donaldson reconvened the line-up from his 1957 albumĀ Swing and SoulĀ withĀ Herman FosterĀ on piano,Ā Peck MorrisonĀ on bass,Ā Dave BaileyĀ on drums, andĀ Ray BarrettoĀ on congas. The excellent six-song set yielded one of his most memorable themes with the cool struttin’ title track, a laid-back minor blues that opens the album with a standout performance by the leader. Donaldson keeps it bluesy on his tune ā€œPlay Ray,ā€ showcases his bop chops on uptempo numbers like ""Denzil Best’s ā€œMoveā€ and his own ā€œCallin’ All Cats,ā€ and delivers stunning renditions of the standards ā€œAutumn Nocturneā€ and ā€œThe Masquerade Is Over.ā€

UHQ-CD’s reproduce the sound of original master tapes as faithfully as possible by utilizing new transfer technologies and improved materials to produce high-quality sound with a better representation of the whole stage. UHQ-CDs comply with CD standards and can be played on existing players. Each title is presented in a UHQ-CD jewel case with an obi-strip and the original sleeve notes reproduced on the back inlay.
