McCoy Tyner - Time for Tyner (UHQ-CD)
The great pianistĀ McCoy TynerĀ made his Blue Note debut withĀ The Real McCoyĀ in 1967 soon after departing John Coltraneās quartet and returned to the studio months after Coltraneās death to record Tender MomentsĀ with an expanded ensemble featuring a 6-piece horn section. For his 3rd Blue Note dateĀ Time For Tyner, recorded in 1968, the pianist went a different direction by assembling a hornless quartet with vibraphonistĀ Bobby Hutcherson, bassistĀ Herbie Lewis, and drummerĀ Freddie Waits. Tyner and Hutchersonās first recorded encounter came on the vibraphonistās 1966 Blue Note albumĀ Stick-Up, and here their musical comradery deepened even further. The piano-vibraphone led configuration imbues the album with ethereal textures throughout, but the musicians nonetheless deliver visceral and thrilling performances. The 6-song set begins with three expansive Tyner originalsāāAfrican Village,ā āLittle Madimba,ā and āMay Streetāāand ends with three radically reinvented standardsāa quartet version of āI Didnāt Know What Time It Wasā followed by a trio version of āāSurrey with the Fringe on Topā before Tyner closes the album with a stunning solo piano performance of āIāve Grown Accustomed to Her Face."
