Pink Label Slip Mat

Limited edition Pink Label merch inspired by the first-ever Blue Note releases in 1939.

9 oz. felt slipmat featuring a limited edition Blue Note 1939 pink vinyl label-inspired design.
12" Round

December 23, 1938 was a fateful day in Blue Note Records history when a German immigrant and passionate jazz fan named Alfred Lion attended the historic concert "From Spirituals To Swing,” a celebration of black music produced by John Hammond at Carnegie Hall in New York City. So enthralled was Lion by the boogie woogie pianists he heard that night—Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, and Meade “Lux” Lewis—that the inspiration to start a record label of his own so he could record them was born. Two weeks later on January 6, 1939 he convinced Ammons and Lewis to come to the studio to record for his still unnamed label. March 3, 1939 was the release date for Blue Note’s first releases, two 12” records—a format typically used for classical music—which allowed the pianists “more room to stretch out,” as Lion explained. BN 1 featured “Melancholy” and “Solitude” by Lewis, while BN 2 featured “Boogie Woogie Stomp” and “Boogie Woogie Blues” by Ammons. Lion pressed just 25 copies of each, but due to a printer error the first run of labels were printed in pink and black, a mistake that we pay tribute to with our limited edition Pink Label Merch Collection.
