The Detroit born alto saxophonistĀ Sonny RedĀ made only one album as a leader for Blue Note, butĀ Out of the BlueĀ remains a gem of the catalog deserving of much wider recognition. Redās lightly swinging style shines on this 8-song set of bluesy originals and obscure standards, which was drawn from two different quartet sessions. The first sessionārecorded in December 1959 withĀ Wynton KellyĀ on piano,Ā Sam JonesĀ on bass, andĀ Roy BrooksĀ on drumsāyielded six of the albumās final cuts including the buoyant opener āBluesvilleā and the stunning ballad āStay As Sweet As You Are.ā Red returned to the studio in January 1960 once again with Kelly on piano, but this time joined byĀ Paul ChambersĀ on bass andĀ Jimmy CobbĀ on drums, a trio that was alsoĀ Miles DavisāĀ rhythm section at the time having just recorded onĀ Kind of BlueĀ the year before. The albumās final two tracks feature this quartet on Redās original āThe Lopeā and the ballad āStairway to the Stars.ā
UHQ-CDās reproduce the sound of original master tapes as faithfully as possible by utilizing new transfer technologies and improved materials to produce high-quality sound with a better representation of the whole stage. UHQ-CDs comply with CD standards and can be played on existing players. Each title is presented in a UHQ-CD jewel case with an obi-strip and the original sleeve notes reproduced on the back inlay.
