Wayne Shorter - Odyssey of Iska LP (Tone Poet Vinyl Series)
The winds of change were blowing throughĀ Wayne Shorterās life and career in 1970. The saxophonist had just left Miles Davisā group and was soon to form his collective fusion band Weather Report. His music was evolving too as he began to delve into his own unique fusion explorations on his previous two Blue Note recordingsĀ Super Nova andĀ Moto Grosso Feio. Recorded in August 1970, the mesmerizingĀ Odyssey of IskaĀ would be the last release of Shorterās early Blue Note period. The album was a tribute to his daughter Iskaāwho had been born the year before with severe brain damageāwith four immersive Shorter compositions portraying a variety of moods: āWind,ā āStorm,ā āCalm,ā and āJoy.ā
The albumās centerpiece is an extended version of Bobby Thomasā Brazilian influenced piece āDe Pois do Amor, o Vazioā (After Love, Emptiness), foreshadowing Shorterās growing interest in Brazilian music which he would explore further in the years to come. Shorterās soprano and tenor saxophones are the lone horns heard on the album which featuredĀ Gene BertonciniĀ on guitar,Ā David FriedmanĀ on vibraphone and marimba,Ā Ron CarterĀ andĀ Cecil McBeeĀ on bass, andĀ Alphonse Mouzon,Ā Billy Hart, andĀ Frank CuomoĀ contributing drums and percussion.
